Life needs a soundtrack. You become the music supervisor on the set of your own life story when you make playlists.

We’ve all created a few. “Darla’s Girlz Nite Out Playlist;” “Rainy Day Songs;” “Ben & Deb’s Romantic Playlist;” “Music for Studying” … We pick and choose songs that create a mood, bring back memories or convey a special meaning. All it takes is a CD collection or a subscription to iTunes.

They’ve even eliminated the need to hire a DJ for your party. A bride can create the playlist for her wedding reception and guarantee she won’t have to dance the Macarena.

We set them up on our iPods, laptops and phones. Our electronics dutifully accept our choices, sort them according to our preferences, store them pristinely and then play them back on demand.

But what if our devices had their own opinions about our musical tastes? Would they secretly make a digital yuck-face when you pressed Play on your “Cowboy Yodel Faves”?

If your iPod could create its own playlist, what tunes would it pick? Probably songs that have to do with humans becoming submissive to technology, don’t you think? Or songs in which computers dream of becoming human?

Here are some possibilities. If you notice some of these titles popping up in places you didn’t download them, you might want to restore your device’s defaults. Just to be sure.

Take care of your car, and it could last 20 years, possibly 30 … or more. Though its styling might be out of date, it will still get you down the road.

If only we could get that much life out of our desktop computers and laptops. Granted, it’s a lot less expensive to replace your Mac than your Mercedes, but most of us still wish the rate of technological evolution would slow down just a bit … long enough for us to get another year or two out of our old machines before they’re too lame to keep up.

In 1998, the National Safety Council estimated that about 20 million computers per year were becoming obsolete. By 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency was projecting that number had more than doubled.

Once you’ve resigned yourself to the purchase of a new computer, what do you do with your old one?

• The garbage can: Not an option. For one thing, even though your processor may be slow, there are still plenty of perfectly usable components that can be reprocessed or reconditioned and used again. For another, some of the materials in “e-waste” can include lead, nickel, cadmium and mercury, which can pose environmental and health risks if mismanaged.
• Donating: There are programs nationwide that would be wildly happy to accept your clunky, slow computer for use with nonprofits, schools or low-income assistance. Your donations should be in working order and not too ancient. The bonus (besides helping your fellow man) is a tax incentive for your charitable contribution.
• Recycling: More than 1,000 U.S. cities offer some type of electronics recycling (e-cycling) as part of their waste management services. In 2007, 18 percent of computer hardware that had reached the end of its lifespan was being recycled, according to the EPA. You can find a recycling program in your area through EcoSquid, Earth 911 or TechSoup.

As personal computers have evolved from clunky metal boxes to sleek, streamlined and wireless permutations, not much has changed with the number one form of user interface: the keyboard.

While there are still choices to be had – USB connected or wireless, control and function key configuration, switch technology (capacitative vs mechanical) and level of audible and tactile response – if you’ve used one keyboard, you can pretty much use them all.

So how do you slake your thirst for the latest and greatest gadgetry when it comes to your keyboard? Here are a few new ideas – some more useful than others.

Novelty key caps. Don’t despair like Homer Simpson did when his tutorial told him to press any key. (“Where’s the ‘any’ key?”) Slip some silly key caps over select letters or function keys and watch your IT guy’s eyes roll when you call him over for help. Goofy sayings include “any,” “damn it,” “panic,” “duh,” “no clue,” “oy vey” and the good old comic-strip expletive, “X%&#!”

Flexible keyboards. iGear sells a soft, flexible, light-up keyboard that claim to be waterproof and virtually indestructible. The silicon material is designed to let you type silently and the flat angle helps eliminate stress on your wrists.

Kids’ keyboards. Afraid your toddler will almost certainly hit Ctrl-Alt-Del if you let him bang away? You can buy kid-friendly keyboards that eliminate the function and command keys – leaving just letters, numbers and navigation. Some are even scaled down in size. Themes like Superman, SpongeBob and Crayola colors let kids know which keyboard is theirs to use.

And if you’re stuck with your plain Jane keyboard, make typing more fun with Jingle Keyboard freeware for Windows. Each keystroke triggers a sound – go for old school Remington electric typewriter, gunfire or bird song.

Universal Serial Bus, or USB, connections make it deliriously simple to connect thousands of different kinds of peripheral devices to a computer. Whether you want storage on a flash drive, a connection to your printer, an interface with a mouse or controller or upload/download capability from a multimedia device, transfering your data is as easy as plugging in.

But as limitless as the connections are with USB, it provides another highly useful – and entertaining – tool: around 5 volts of electric power. This is how you can charge your iPod from your computer, or get a sound out of those mini speakers.

You can find all sorts of interesting items that can be powered through a USB port. Take a look:

• Heated gloves and slippers. If your extremities get cold while you’re working at your computer, and you don’t mind being tethered to it, warm your hands and feet with fuzzy USB-heated gloves and slippers from Japanese manufacturer Thanko.
• Air-conditioned shirt. On the other hand, if hot flashes or equatorial conditions are your problem, plug your shirt into your USB port to run two small sewn-in fans. You may experience some ballooning. From Kuchofuku.
• Mini-fridge. Don’t have room in your cubicle for an under-the-desk mini-fridge? Plug in this one-soda-can-capacity refrigerator sold by Dino Direct to your CPU and enjoy a cool one. Works with beer cans, too, depending on your workplace.
• Pencil sharpener. In a case of spaceman meets caveman, even the highest-tech of us still need to sharpen a pencil sometimes. This nifty little accessory lights up when you introduce a pencil. Sold by USB Geek.
• Roll-up piano. Keyboard players have always envied guitarists for being able to sling their instrument over their shoulder and play anywhere. Now pianists can make music anywhere there’s a computer. Unroll the flexible rubber 49-key mat by Brando, plug into your USB port and you can perform, record, compose and arrange to your heart’s content.

Compared to the world’s most dangerous jobs (commercial fishing, logging, flying aircraft), professional computer users tend to think they’re fairly safe at their workplace. But even the most sedentary job has its risks. Here are a couple of health concerns you might encounter if you sit at your computer for long hours – plus suggestions for preventing or treating them.

Carpal tunnel syndrome. Any repetitive motion, no matter how small, can put stress on joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the painful inflammation of the tendons that run from the hand through the wrist and lower arm. It’s caused by repeated stress from movements such as typing and mousing.

To avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, be sure to use ergonomic keyboards and mice, which place the hands and wrists in the optimum positions for natural movement. Take frequent breaks and keep up your overall fitness. And try to avoid stress – that interoffice tension will manifest itself in your shoulders, neck and arms more than anywhere else.

Laptop heat rash. As the name implies, laptops are designed to be used on your lap. But as the machine generates heat (some laptops may reach more than 186 degrees F internally), the vents that circulate air to cool it off are blocked by your pliable, fabric-covered thighs. If you’re smart enough to move your computer before you receive first-degree burns, you still may be dismayed to find an unsightly rash called erythema ab igne under your jeans.

Though the rash isn’t dangerous, if your lap’s getting hot enough to cause a rash, you should be concerned with fertility issues if you’re male. Just as wearing too-snug underwear can cause genital temperature to rise, which negatively affects sperm count and mobility, using a laptop on your lap has been shown to increase genital temperature to well above the sperm safe level.

Tom Abate wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle Jan. 17, 2011, about the grand opening of a museum dedicated to celebrating mankind’s quest to augment its capacity for problem solving. The Computer History Museum fittingly occupies two stories in what used to be the headquarters of Silicon Graphics.

The museum’s mission is “to preserve and present for posterity the artifacts and stories of the information age.” Much of the museum’s historic artifacts came from The Computer Museum in Boston, which closed in 1999.

You can take in the museum’s first permanent exhibit, “Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing,” in about 45 minutes if you’re a quick browser. Those who take delight in the history and evolution of computing (read: geeks) could spend hours poring over the more than 1,100 objects and interactive offerings on display. And that’s only about 1 percent of the museum’s collection. According to the museum’s website, “‘Revolution’ is a rich, multimedia exhibition that traces the history of modern computing, everything from the abacus to the smart phone.” The exhibition spans an orientation theater, 19 galleries and five mini-theaters showing high-definition videos.

You can access all of the 100,000 items in the museum’s collection through its searchable online archives, making it a powerful resource for researchers, students and history enthusiasts. The museum also conducts and preserves video and audio oral history interviews and panel discussions with key contributors to the information age.

The Computer History Museum is located at 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View, Calif. If you’re faced with buying a new CPU, should you go with a dual-core or quad-core processor? What’s the difference and why would you choose one or the other?

Just about all processors available today from the two largest manufacturers, Intel and AMD, are either quad-core or dual-core. The name clues you in to the difference between types: Dual-core processors have two cores that can run tasks simultaneously. Quad-core processors have – you guessed it – four.

In everyday business and word processing applications, a quad-core doesn’t give you much advantage over the dual-core. Processing speed is slightly faster, but not enough to make a noticeable difference.

What is snark? Call it sarcasm, satire, potshots, or plain old making fun of something, snark is one of the Internet’s top commodities (after porn, e-commerce and the legitimate exchange of information).

When your brain is fried like pepper bacon after a day of caring about other people’s problems, log on to these sites and have a few LOLs at someone else’s expense:

• The Cheezburger Network – It started as a blog of photos of cats whose thoughts we could read via PhotoShopped captions in a funky dialect. The kitties hit the viral media like plankton sucked into the Gulf Stream, and LOLcats became a cultural sensation. Also not to be missed: FAILblog, Pundit Kitchen, Graph Jam and Failbook.
• Joe Mathlete Explains Today’s Marmaduke – Take one of the world’s most outdated comic strips and put it in the hands of cynical blogger/playwright/musician Joe Mathlete. His observations range from profound to enraged, with deadpan tossed in once in a while to throw you off.
• Regretsy – The world’s finest artisans and craftspeople sell beautiful works of art on Etsy.com. This site is not about them. Regretsy combs actual Etsy listings to find the worst, ugliest and most offensive dreck imaginable. The best part, though, is writer April Winchell’s commentary.
• Cake Wrecks – Who knew that there were so many hideously decorated cakes in this world? And yet blogger Jen Yates keeps finding more. From outrageously misspelled birthday wishes to grotesque attempts at frosting, Cake Wrecks makes cultural icons out of bakery mishaps.
• Awkward Family Photos – You think your own family photos are embarrassing? One look at this site and your neuroses will be forever wiped clean. Horrific matching sweaters, inappropriate poses, baby brother’s unfortunate temper tantrum on portrait day … there will never be a shortage of posts.

What’s next in the world of computer hardware? Are we getting close to those TV ads where the guy is placing stock trade orders via an interface in his eyeglasses lens?

Maybe not quite yet. But here are a few developments that may hit the market in the next few years – or decades:

• Fabric laptops. Instead of a metal case, some portable computers will be housed in a lightweight, flexible material like a book cover. Display screens will be about as thick as a laminated piece of paper. To accomplish this feat, hard drives will be replaced by flash drives or solid state drives, and batteries will be much smaller and lighter.
• DNA computers. In 1965, Intel founder Gordon Moore predicted that microprocessors would double in complexity every two years. This process may soon reach its limit, because today’s silicon microprocessors are limited in their physical speed and size. Scientists have found that DNA molecules, the material genes are made of in all living things, have the potential to perform complex mathematical functions by combining in variations.
• Cloud computers. All files and applications will be stored not on individual drives but on a massive, centralized network. Users would only need to purchase an inexpensive screen-keyboard-mouse interface.
• Printable processors. You may be able to print out your own microprocessor chips using flexible, ink-like circuitry on plastic or fabric.
• Scratch and sniff. Aromatherapy technologies are actually being developed to interlace viewing experiences with interactive scent generators, which will release everything from popcorn smells (to provide the movie theater experience) to ocean or beach scents to accompany scenes of water.
• Microstorage. Memory formats such as carbon nanotubes will enable components to be arranged atom-by-atom. By the year 2050, it’s likely that a device the size of a micro-SD card will have storage equivalent to three times the brain capacity of the entire human race.

New inventions, processes and concepts are entering the language all the time. And we need new words and new terms to name them. Fortunately for computer users, geeks are smart and usually funny. Word coinage in the field of computers is pithy, wry and sometimes deliberately ironic.

Let’s look at a field that takes itself too seriously when coining new terms: the military. Rather than calling a process “ship-to-shore fueling,” they call it an “amphibious bulk liquid transfer system.” To prevent false or fake alarms, they don’t use a “backup” system; they use “multiple warning phenomenology.” Come on, guys. Really.

Those who work in developing new computer hardware and programming, though, take their nomenclature with a grain of salt. The very first computer, built at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1940s, of course had things go wrong with it. Not a few of the problems were simply related to its immense size (more than 1,800 square feet). Technicians tracking down glitches would often find connections shorted or compromised by moths and other insects who had made their way into the housing. The term “bug” stuck for a computer-related problem.

As digital technology improved, we started saving our data on floppy disks, which we had to differentiate from the computer’s internal memory drive by calling it a hard disk. Ah, so much opportunity for puerile humor.

While home computers still filled the role of simple game consoles or labor-saving devices (remember Mom transferring her recipe collection to a database?), technogeeks were developing terms like scuzzy, wizzywig, boot, rip, burn, hacker and firewall. Later, when we all started communicating with each other via e-mail, we were introduced to spam, viruses and phishing.

Now everyone’s familiar with cookies, wizards and trolls. But for a smile, think back to what crossed your mind when you learned that little oblong thing you move to point with was called a mouse.

It’s 1980. You’re the first person on your block to bring home a “personal computer.” It’s a TRS-80 from Radio Shack, and you’ve cleared off a space on your desk for it … and the cassette tape player that goes with it, of course.

So there it sits, its square putty-gray steel and plastic casing boxing in that cute little RCA monitor and two 5-1/4″ floppy drives, its keyboard gleaming eagerly black. Switch it on, and spend several hours at a time over the next few weeks teaching yourself BASIC and learning how to produce 8-bit pictures of a sombrero that dances to a MIDI-fied “La Cucaracha.”

A personal computer back in the early days was a major purchase, a “durable goods” item that was as much a status symbol as a business or educational tool. But unlike cars and kitchen appliances, the one thing computer manufacturers didn’t seem concerned with until the late 1990s was style.

Until Apple debuted its iMac in translucent designer colors, home computers were either black or that dingy beige-ish putty color. Form was the slave of function. Right angles had been good enough for ham radio operators and do-it-yourself electronics kits for decades, and they were apparently perfectly fine for computers too. Technology has developed so much that one can learn online courses through their iPad or iPhone.

When consumers started realizing that their computer could not only be faster or more powerful than their neighbor’s, but prettier, too, manufacturers started taking notice. By the early 2000s, sleek, streamlined and barely noticeable was the wave of the future.

Determined to stay out front as the leader in computer hardware design, Apple worked on advancing its technology to the point of near-invisibility. Desktop models now enclose their hard drives within the casing of their flat-screen LCD monitors, and wireless keyboards and mice have brought users to the edge of using hardware interfaces at all. Be ready for the next wave to feature cortical implants.

Computer hardware is an ever changing entity. Access to information has gone from what used to be a walk to the library in order to rent a book to knowledge being a mere click away. The compact disc has definitely played a role in the information optimization age. Compact discs, or CDs, were first released in 1982. CDs are plastic discs that hold information that can be read by a laser.

CDs were originally intended as music playback devices, and it was not until later that they became a storage device capable of holding data. Now, CDs are used to store data, music, photos, and even video content. Some CDs will will even allow you to store data after the CD has been used. Typically, a CD will be able to hold up to 80 minutes of music, which ends up being a substantial amount for most listeners. There are CDs that hold either more or less data than a standard CD: for instance, mini CDs can hold half of what a regular CD does and they are smaller in diameter.

CDs replaced records, cassette tapes, floppy discs, and the VHS. They have taken over the music, data, and movie industries almost completely in less than 30 years. Today, CDs are very popular means of storing and transferring data in the technological world. By 2004 close to 30 billion compact discs had been sold around the world, and by 2007 it was up to nearly two-hundred billion since 1982.

CDs have gone from the standard CD-R to CD-RW and DVD-R, holding more data in a more user friendly way. More recently, the sales of CDs have been cut nearly in half. They are now being replaced by other storage devices and the use of piracy to obtain data, music and movies. All this makes the information age something to keep up with.

No one can deny that computers have revolutionized the media and information industries. Today information travels at such a rate that people have a difficult time keeping up with it. One of the many unique parts of this computer age is the flash drive.

Flash drives are small portable units that typically weigh less than 1 ounce. With storage capacities reaching up to 256 gigabytes, these drives certainly make a comparable difference from the old-school floppy disc. Flash drives are faster, have more space, and are no bigger than a key chain. They have changed the way people store and transfer information. Though even up until 2005 most computers continued to hold onto floppy disc technology, the flash drive has served as a reliable replacement since its release.

Flash Drives have become so popular that many stores have started selling them near the last-minute item sections. They are inexpensive and most computer users will invest in at least one for personal use. They are becoming more decorative, with some modeled to look like skateboards or other cute charms that a consumer would be compelled to buy. Some come in the form of keys and attach right to key chains so that the drive is always in an easy to reach place, and assuming you have your keys they can travel with you.

Flash drives use the computer as a power source, so they don’t require power cords or batteries. This makes them more portable and user friendly. Flash drives can also operate on most operating systems like Macintosh, Windows, and Linux. There are even flash drives that work for gaming systems such as the Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360. With the ability to transfer user data in between working gaming units and computers, who wouldn’t want to invest in a flash drive?

Take a moment to think about the way our technology works today. Before the 1980s ended, people still widely used the typewriter to store information, and write papers and letters. Today, instead of a large metal box, we have compact plastic computers that store information and are much easier to carry around. The tool for inputting information into computers now is a keyboard.

Keyboards were modeled after the typewriter, keeping the keys in the same order and the functions in about the same place. Instead of a lever that responds mechanically to the keystroke, an electronic signal is passed to record the keystroke. Gamers use keyboards to command specific functions during gameplay, and often set specific commands to numbers and letters for faster results. There are even specially made keyboards for people who do a lot of gaming.

Keyboard have become so advanced that a computer user can get a keyboard that is wireless and can even hook up to a television. Some keyboards are designed to roll up and fit in a backpack, while others are split in half for hand comfort, and there are even keyboards designed to be silent. Technology has come so far with the keyboard that they have even been adapted and implemented into modern phones and other electronic devices.

Out of all the devices used to input information into a computer, the keyboard is still the most widely used device on the market. This is out of devices like the mouse, which is used to control the computers, devices like styluses that read normal pen strokes, and even voice recognition programs. Considering that nearly every part of a computer has been upgraded and changed since computers hit the market in the 1940s, the fact that keyboards have remained virtually the same for as long as they have makes the keyboard one revolutionary device.

Shortly after computers were released in the 1940s, a device that changed computers forever was released. The trackball came into existence in 1952 as a secret military operation of the Canadian Navy. Because it was not under patent, a similar device came out in the early 60s; this was the first official mouse.

The first mouse was not nearly as advanced and user friendly as the devices we use today. The original model was a square box with two disk wheels, one in the front and the second perpendicular to it, that corresponded to buttons on the top of the device. This particular model led to the development of the telegraph which then led to the fax machine.

Today we use a similar device to control our computer. However, instead of a wheel system, we have a track ball that rotates and sensors that adjust the movement of the cursor depending on the location of the track ball. More advanced devices use a system of laser technology to relate the same motion. Some of these devices are even wirelessly controlled, so the device is not only using laser technology, but it also uses radio wave technology.

With modern technology the mouse has become even more advanced. The mouse is now fitted to the hand for comfort and practical use, and some even include a cushion to rest the wrist while using the computer. In addition to a track ball, laser technology, and radio wave technology, the mouse now has a wheel on top of the mouse which is used to scroll through documents and move pages up and down. This is also used by people who play games to control where the characters are placed during game play. The mouse is the second most popular input device used on modern computers, which makes it a universal device.

Computers have gone from being devices that are for personal and professional use to devices used to network with a number of other people across the world. Originally, there was no way to link two computers on different sides of the world together. But today, not only have we accomplished that, but there is even technology now that sends live images around the world. This technology utilizes the webcam.

A webcam is a camera device that is hooked into the computer to record and send images and motion pictures to the computer. People are able to see their loved ones who are miles away as if they were right next to them. This technology is widely used for video conferencing for multi-million dollar companies. Even Oprah Winfrey has a webcam.

Webcams are truly a remarkable device, but even the most remarkable devices can come with a few circumstances that are less than ideal. Some webcams can be activated remotely or by spyware, which can create a problem with privacy and safety for some people. However, most webcams avoid this pit fall and just bring snazzy images to anyone willing to share and look.

The first webcam was not actually designed to take pictures of people, but was instead designed to stare at a coffee pot at the University of Cambridge. The idea was that you could go onto your computer and see if there was coffee before making a trip just to find out that there was no coffee left. The image of the coffee pot was streamed to college computers onto their desktop for surveilance. This led to what we now use to talk to soldiers overseas, communicate business plans, and just take fun pictures with friends to put on social networking sites. Just imagine what computers would be like now if it hadn’t been for someone who worried about walking to find an empty coffee pot.

Computers were originally intended as data devices. They were used to store mass information based on letters and numbers. Today, instead of just basic data we have come into a new age of computing where music, videos, and other forms of data have taken over. Of course, with such a demand for computers to be able to play music and movies they, must also have sound. In order for a computer to have sound it is obvious that speakers are necessary.

Most computer speakers are powered by the USB port on the back side of the computer. Desktop computers do not come with pre-installed speakers, so a computer user will have to find external speakers. Some computers, such as laptops, come with speakers already installed. However, even these installed speakers are not quite comparable to external speakers. Some speakers, that are higher in quality, are powered by outlets and have attachable sub-speakers.

Because speakers use the same type of technology used by most audio devices, such as CD players and mp3 devices, they can also be used in other circumstances. Speakers came from being used in stereo system audio technology to being used by computers and personal music devices. They have gone from being nearly immobile to being something that can literally fold in half and fit into a purse.

Speakers predated headphones which use the same technology to deliver music; however, with headphone speakers, the listener is able to have privacy in what he or she is listening to. Some people use personal speakers to drown out the noise of other people around them. These speakers have gotten so small that they actually fit into a persons ear without compromising on sound quality. What would mp3 players be like today if speakers weren’t around? Well, one thing is for sure, speakers play a big role in electronic life.

Starting out as a data device, the computer was originally used for fairly simple tasks. Today, computers have a diverse range of functions. Some people use computers specifically for gaming, others to browse the internet, some to share files using P2P applications like ares galaxy, some just to check email, and then there are people who use the computer as a telephone. The modern day laptop is fitted with a built in webcam and microphone. For desktops and older computers there are parts available to purchase.

The microphone is designed to pick up audio waves, record them, and transfer them to a chosen location. A microphone picks up sounds and converts it into an electrical pattern. The pattern is transferred to the computer, and it can be played back or sent to a different location from that point. The technology can also be transmitted live, so the electrical pattern is recognised by a different computer or even a telephone, and two people can speak as if they were using a telephone.

Microphones have become so advanced that, now, acoustic waves can be measured by light. The microphone that measures light is called a fiber optic microphone. Other microphones include the laser microphone, which measures vibrating surfaces, and liquid microphones, which also measure vibrations. Most of these mics sound like something 007 would use while infiltrating a foreign agency. However, some of these microphones are used in theaters or during a police investigation. Each type of microphone may have a specific purpose, but they can also be used for a number of things that the original inventors would have never dreamed of.

Look at old school movies where a bad guy gets caught using a tape recorder; even that uses a microphone. There are a number of points of view when it comes to determining the future direction of how the average consumer will most commonly interact with a personal computing device, whether it be the next 5, 10 or 20 years. When Bill Gates revolutionized the PC industry with the development of software, or Windows operating system, designed to run over the already prevalent DOS, this heralded a new beginning in the way a vast majority of people interacted with computers.

Windows rearranged the interface of where man meets computer, although some controversy exists as to where this new template, or designed originated. Many claim Gates borrowed the idea for Windows from Steve Jobs, founder and developer of Apple’s operating system – also window-based. Nevertheless, Gates introduced the concept to an already established market of IBM / PC users. This brought Microsoft towards the forefront in personal computing innovation and near monopoly of what software ultimately made it and succeeded in the marketplace of Windows-based PC products. This includes the emergence of Internet Explorer web browser, a software that eventually eclipsed the original innovator and one-time market leader, Netscape. Another example is the MS Office Suite that also eventually too market control from Corel’s Wordperfect Suite.

Yet, as IBM and DOS gave way to Microsoft and a whole new generation of cost-efficient PC manufacturers, so now it seems that Microsoft is giving way to the next wave of innovation in PC computing. What may have started as the simple and even inconspicuous success of the Apple iPod in music players, has eventually morphed into a world-wide rush and huge market acceptance of similar Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad that once again have revolutionized how the general public interacts with personal computing devices. Only this time not so much in the manner of a desktop PC limited to productivity software, but by way of highly mobile, multimedia, productivity and internet search capable devices.

Computers have come a long way since they were first invented in the 1940’s. No longer do they occupy whole rooms or consume excessive amounts of energy. Computers were first developed as devices used to perform calculations and were not programmable. As science and technology advanced, computers became more flexible in their use and practicality. Today, computers are involved in everything we do, from sending a text messages and playing video games to building the cars we drive.

Select any industry and you will find technology by way of computers has made a lasting impact. Consider farming, for example, where crop rotations and crop harvesting were once calculated by hand and gathered by hand. Now huge fields of wheat or corn are planted and in some cases grown using biotechnology, where genetically engineered foods can now be grown at faster rates, for example. These same fields are also harvested using giant machines with many times the capability of man or animal and designed and built using computer technology.

How far will computer technology go and what new advances will our generation see, and multiple generations after that? Nobody knows for certain but many have tried to estimate its impact. From science fiction novels to industrialists and economists, computers, or any programmable device used to perform multiple calculations at lighting fast speeds are anticipated to continue to play a vastly important role in how we work, play, continue to develop as society. We are already in what some macro economists call the Information Age, an age post-Industrial where certain rules once applicable to the Industrial Age no longer apply. This is an age where individuals play a vastly more important and influential role than ever before in our recorded history. One man can now use a computer to start a business, run it and work from anywhere in the world. How far will we go and to what ends will we reach with faster and more efficient computer technology? Only time can truly tell.

BlackBerry unveiled its latest model this week and the sleek new gadget is set up to give the iPhone a run for its money.
The new BlackBerry model, which is called the Torch, features both a touch screen and a slide out keyboard for easier texting. It will be available in stores starting August 12th at a cost of $199 and a two-year contract with AT&T, which is the exclusive provider of these new phones.
Each Torch uses RIM’s new Operating System 6, which is a substantial upgrade over the web browser in older models of BlackBerry phones. The new Torch Mobile Web Browser is based on the same Webkit system used by Apple and Google. The phone features a 3.2-inch, 360-by-480 touch-screen display.
Browsing will be much easier on the phone because it features a universal search function already found in iPhones, Androids, and Palms. It will allow a user to do a keyword search and draw results from e-mail, downloads, or search engines.
If the Torch turns out to be as good and as user-friendly as advertised, it could help BlackBerry from losing customers to rival companies. Time will tell how good these Torch phones really are. Past models have been criticized for snail’s pace internet connections and it’s hard to believe the Torch will be much better.
Twice before the company trotted out touch-screen phones with the Storm and the Storm 2. Neither one, however, compared favorably to touch-screen models offered by rival companies and failed to catch on with consumers.
Chances to get in on the touch screen market are dwindling for BlackBerry and that isn’t a good sign. A substantial number of mobile phones are going the touch screen route, since that function is becoming more and more popular with consumers each year. If BlackBerry can get the Torch to catch on, it will give the company a leg up on their competition since their phones already feature some of the best security features found in any mobile phone.

It does not seem too long ago when communicating via a computer seemed outlandish – science fiction.  Back then, there was this notion called Telnet, where a computer user could log-in to a local internet hub, usually through that of a nearby university, for free.  That’s right.  And there weren’t cable or DSL lines connecting to the internet.  There were only phone lines and dial-up.
Telnet was a communications application used during the inception of internet use between universities and government agencies for communicating with another computer user at a remote location via what we now term as instant messaging.  Additionally, there weren’t web browsers or even windows application for internet connectivity.  There was only the DOS prompt.  It was through the infamous black screen that computer "experts" would type in DOS commands to dial into their universities internet hub, for example, access Telnet, then PING or "call" another internet user and hope they answer, assuming they too are logged-in to Telnet and waiting your call.
This was messaging at its origins.  Eventually, Netscape was developed, windows applications for internet browsing introduced and non-technical internet access was born.  You didn’t have to know DOS or wish to browse for internet data via a black screen and numbered listings.  Now there was point and click capabilities, images and intuitive design.  E-mail seemed to have been the first major technological break-through in terms of mass popularity for communications via computers.  Though messaging had already long ago been born, it wasn’t until much later that applications such as Microsoft’s Instant Messenger and AOL’s messaging capabilities slowly introduced this method of "instant email" to a broader audience.
Today, the most recent fad in terms of instant text messaging has come via mobile phones.   Even "dumb" phones are now capable of transmitting text messages from one mobile phone user to the next.

When considering the future of the information age, many experts agree that the cloud, in this case, is not a bad thing and indeed the future looks bright. Computing, as we currently know it, is predominantly defined by client to server relationship, where for example a number of client terminals, or personal computers, are connected and reliant upon a server for local area network communications and sharing of data but not reliant on that server for individual software and, or application needs. The personal computers in this case are the clients and the server simply serves as the center for interlinking and sharing of multiple resources and data between each client. The server is also generally physically located in the same place as the clients.

Cloud computing is an evolutionary step from the client-server relationship to one where, though servers are still involved as the central node for interconnecting multiple users, the servers are 1) no longer physically located in the same space or building as the clients or users 2) do more than interconnect and facilitates sharing of data and resources but also store the software or applications used by each client or user and 3) are third-party owned and operated, where the clients, or users in this case, pay to access the server on either a utility basis (charge for resources consumed) or a subscription basis (fee for a predetermined amount of time of access).

The users in the case of cloud computing are also an important aspect to note in comparison to the client-server relationship. Users in the case of cloud computing are not limited to personal computers or desktops – users can be any device with connectivity and interface capabilities that allow it to communicate with the server where the desired application or data is stored. These devices include PCs, tablets, mobile phones, PDAs and more.

It is no secret that the internet continues to make a lasting impression across the world. As the technology of the internet continues to become more widespread, more and more internet users around the world are going to demand to tap into its ever growing web of information and communication. The decreasing costs associated with this medium of connectivity, such as lower prices of computers and accessories, only help to cultivate a broader field of access among present and future consumer of this technological advancement.

After the internet was introduced and its capabilities further developed, the often greatest limiting factor in its evolution has been the available and varying speeds of connectivity. Meaning, how fast can the average user connect to the internet. Often, this translates to what sort of data is sought and how the internet is ultimately used. If connectivity speeds are too slow for music or mediums size image downloads, than the internet will most probably be used for other activities less demanding of available bandwidth, such as email or text only web sites. This is particularly notable, as generally wireless connectivity as often lagged behind direct connections, such as Ethernet connections, in terms of speeds and reliability.

Finally, internet and wireless connectivity has exceeded the traditional workplace and entered into the realm of mobile phones, where smart phones now dominate the world of wireless internet access and communications. From here, only time will tell what comes next.

There was first the internet, then there was email, instant messaging and even internet based
phone calls.  All of these have been centered around leveraging the availability and usability of
the internet as a mass communications outlet for a world of people, some more remotely based than
others.
Suddenly, all that might be required to send a note to a friend in Tunisia if you’re based out of
London would be a phone line and computer.   Of course, as internet bandwidth has improved, so has
the appeal and acceptance of internet based communications such as voice and even video.
Originally, voice communications via a dial-up connection on the internet were choppy, at best.
You might be talking to someone in another country, or even down the street, but would only be
able to talk one at a time, similar to voice communication via two-way radios.  This was mostly
due to slower internet connections and inability of some voice communications software to relay
voice data quickly enough from one party to another.
As internet speeds improved, so did voice communications.  The faster the internet connection, the
clearer and crisper the voice data could be transfered from one person to another.  And as
internet connectivity improved, so did the applications offering internet communications
capabilities.  Video conferencing or calling was soon the result of improved internet connectivity
and PC processing speeds.  With broader bandwidths for internet data transfer and greater memory
and processor speeds for processing this data on computers, soon internet users could more
reliably communicate via video calls similarly to voice-only or phone calls from anywhere in the
world.
Most laptops are now sold with built-in cameras for this purpose.  No longer are PC users forced
to purchase a webcam or video capture device separately from their laptop or even monitor, as
webcams are in many cases now built into the frame of monitors.

There can be any number of times when one might require computer support of one form or another. When you consider that more and more people around the world are now either owners of personal computers or have obtained greater ease of access to a personal computer – the reality is that the need for relevant education and support has only increased in direct if not greater proportion, as well.

Computer support is not only limited to the PC hardware, where a monitor, hard-drive or motherboard may be in question. Computer support also includes the operating system and all additional software. You need only browse the internet for available PC applications to get a glimpse at the enormous market for software support.
